Greece: Idomeni - Syrian Single Mother

Greece: Idomeni - Syrian Single Mother

In the refugee and migrant crisis, more children and women are on the move than men - they make up 60% of recent arrivals to Greece, compared o less than 30% in June 2015. Forced to make the dangerous trek into Europe on their own after their husbands, fathers or brothers were killed or otherwise separated. Thousands of women with children are now at Greece's northern border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, some waiting for weeks, hoping to be allowed northwards. Life in the makeshift Idomeni camp is a daily struggle. Nisrine is here with her five children. Her husband was killed by a bomb in Aleppo 3 years ago. Her family’s flight from war came to a halt here. “I feel it is impossible to live here with my children. I can’t bear it. I have been here for ten days. I haven’t had a single night’s rest. They sleep, I don’t.“ Learn more: http://tracks.unhcr.org/2016/03/the-women-and-children-turning-to-europe/ Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at drozditb@unhcr.org or tibaw@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Greece: Refugee Olympic Torch Dream

Greece: Refugee Olympic Torch Dream

Syrian refugee Ibrahim Al-Hussein has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch for a short distance as it travels to Brazil for the Olympic Games in summer 2016. The 27-year old athlete fled fighting in his native Deir Es Zor three years ago when his neighbourhood was shelled and he lost his right leg below the knee. After a year of painful recovery in Turkey, he braved the sea crossing to Greece and was granted asylum. He rents an apartment in Athens and has learned to speak a little Greek. Ibrahim is rebuilding his life and getting back into sports again. He joined a local basketball team and a swimming team and trains everyday. Ibrahim always dreamed of competing in the Olympic Games, but for now he has his eyes set on winning a national title in the Pan-Hellenic Swimming Championship in June - with hard work and determination he believes he will. Greek-Syrian Mayor and Refugees Bring Tourist Village Back to Life

Greek-Syrian Mayor and Refugees Bring Tourist Village Back to Life

"I couldn't believe it that I would have Greek citizenship, and be mayor of an area hosting refugees from Syria. Both as a doctor and human being, I would do everything to help people regardless of their origin." Nabil-Iosif Morad, the Greek-Syrian Mayor of Andravida-Kylini in western Greece, was born in Homs and grew up in Syria. At 17 he left Syria, establishing a new life in Europe, but his brothers and extended family are still in Syria. In Andravida-Kylin, a Greek summer resort that closed five years ago as a result of the financial crisis has been turned into a haven for more than 300 refugees. "I held a meeting with the council and we agreed to bring them here, so they can spend their remaining time in Greece in good hands." Greece calling Germany: A Syrian family long to reunite

Greece calling Germany: A Syrian family long to reunite

The war in Syria tore 13-year-old Ensaf's family apart. Now she and her dad are stuck in Greece, longing to reunite with her mom and brother in Gemany. A legal labyrinth and processing delays in Europe keep them from getting back together. Meet her mom and brother: https://youtu.be/koHrW33J6F8 Ensaf and her dad are living in Pikpa, a volunteer-run settlement on the Greek island of Leros. Her mom and brother await them in Germany. The EU's Dublin Agreement recognizes the right to reunion for refugees and asylum seekers in EU member states, but families often wait months or years for their claims to be heard. Greece: A Refugee Paralympic Dream

Greece: A Refugee Paralympic Dream

For a refugee boy with a spinal cord injury, Paralympicsports have been lifesaving. Najib Alhaj Ali fled Syria in a wheelchair after his home in Homs came under bomb attack, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. The 13-year-old and his family braved the sea crossing by rubber dinghy from Turkey to Greece, where they were eventually granted asylum in 2016. In November, Najib signed up for a pilot Paralympic education project managed by the Hellenic Paralympic Committee, the Agitos Foundation’s Grant Support Programme, and UNHCR. The project is helping to empower refugees with disabilities, with an emphasis on the young, by giving them the chance to learn about Paralympic sports, and to train, be actively engaged and compete in national Paralympic competitions. Crossing the Mediterranean Sea, Haunted by Abuse
Surviving abuse in Libya, after flight from Cote d'Ivoire FGM

Surviving abuse in Libya, after flight from Cote d'Ivoire FGM

Over 200 million women and girls across the world have been subjected to female genital mutilation, while 20,000 seek asylum from FGM-practicing countries in the EU every year. Aisha*, not her real name, was seven years old when she underwent the procedure in her native Ivory Coast. Her eldest daughter was four when it happened to her. Last year Aisha fled with her youngest daughter to save her from being excised. But in Libya, she was caught in a nine-month-long nightmare, where she experienced repeated abuse and witnessed the killings of people detained with her. UNHCR calls for unrestricted humanitarian access in Libya to prevent risks of sexual and gender-based violence and to offer psycho-social support to survivors. Central African refugees, exiled across the river, long for home

Central African refugees, exiled across the river, long for home

More than 60,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have fled across the Ubangi River to a remote part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since fighting erupted in May 2017. But in the Mobayi-Mbongo displacement site, where food and water are in short supply, the refugees face an uncertain future. The majority now depends on the river for their survival, while most women have resorted to day labour to help support their families. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, continues to register new arrivals and has provided essential relief items like plastic sheeting, buckets and sleeping mats to refugees. But despite over 500,000 CAR refugees spread across the region, the crisis remains the most underfunded in the world, making it a challenge to help CAR refugees who have been displaced for years, as well those continuing to flee. In 2016, Vania started freelancing for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, reporting amongst other issues on the refugee crisis in Europe and the Balkans, displacement emergencies across the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, migrant crossings in the Central Mediterranean Sea, droughts in Uganda and the Somali Region of Ethiopia and Cyclones Idai and Kenneth in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. From late 2017 until 2019, she worked full time as UNHCR’s Africa producer and videographer, based in Nairobi and travelling widely to the deep field to report on some of the world’s most neglected humanitarian crises.

In that role, she developed, filmed, scripted and directed stories, both longer reports as well as AJ+ style social media pieces, which were distributed to broadcasters and international agencies and were often picked up by some of the world's most important news outlets, like the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera.

The above reel contains fragments from some of the most important stories Vania covered throughout her time at UNHCR filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, the SAR zone off Libya's western coast, Iraq, Kenya and Greece between 2016 and 2019.
